Make First Move your every move

First Move principles teach us how to use our bodies safely and effectively to avoid physical strain and injury. These principles apply in all aspects of our lives be it workhome, sport and recreation.

The First Move principles are:

  • Power Position - thumbs up and elbows down.

  • Pinky Power – use the power of your hand.

  • Move with balance – butt back & weight in the heels.

  • Toes follow Nose – to avoid twisting.

  • Breathe out for power.

  • Lift like a weightlifter.

Follow this simple 2 step practice for one month – you will be stronger and avoid strain and injury.

  • Pick one First Move principle each day.

  • Pick a ‘cue’ to remind you to practice.
A cue is a regular activity that happens on a daily basis.

Some examples of cues and practice are:

  • When you come back to work from a lunch break practice moving with balance for one minute.

  • At the start of every order focus on shoulders in the Power Position for 10 repetitions.

  • Each time there is a job rotation practice breathing out for power with heavy activities.

  • When you empty the dishwasher practice ‘toes follow nose’ to avoid twisting.

Commit to this for one month - improve your physical wellbeing forever
