We all experience challenging days at work.
Sometimes it’s a heavy workload. Sometimes it’s a difficult conversation, a demanding client, or simply trying to balance everything life throws at us.
You Can’t Always Change the Pressure. But You Can Change the Support.
We might not be able to change the pace or pressure of work, but we can influence how supported people feel while navigating it.
This is where a culture of peer support begins.
Peer Support Isn’t About Having All the Answers
- It isn’t counselling.
- It isn’t fixing people’s problems.
- It isn’t taking on someone else’s emotional load.
Instead, it’s about creating a workplace where people notice, check in, listen, and know when to encourage someone to seek further support.
Peer support is not an extra task. It’s a way of working.
What Does Good Peer Support Look Like?
- Noticing when someone isn’t themselves
- Asking how they’re doing
- Listening without judgement
- Helping people feel valued and encouraged
- Knowing when professional support may be needed
Why It Matters
Positive social connection is one of the strongest protective factors for wellbeing. Feeling seen, supported and understood can reduce isolation, strengthen resilience, and help teams navigate pressure together.
Importantly, peer support isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about noticing when someone may be struggling, starting a conversation, and creating a workplace where people feel seen, heard, and supported.
The good news is that peer support doesn’t require complicated systems or extensive training.
Small, everyday actions can make a meaningful difference to workplace wellbeing.
At AIM, we’ve developed a practical 75-minute Peer Support workshop to help workplaces strengthen wellbeing, build resilience, and create a culture where colleagues feel confident supporting one another.
Delivered online or face-to-face by experienced Occupational Therapists, the workshop explores simple ways to support yourself and those around you – because sometimes the moments that matter most begin over a simple cup of tea or coffee.
